Italian and German tourists pool side at the Sol Palmeras Hotel, jointly owned by Cuba and Spanish investors. Approximately 400,000 tourists visited Cuba in 1991--most of them from Canada, Germany, Mexico, Italy and Spain. Cuba is targeting tourism as its major foreign income earner--in 1991, it earned $250 million dollars for the country, by 1997 it had risen to one billion.
