The high-school years are still the major social event for Appalachian children. Friendships made there last for a lifetime and so in a way, do the young people's identities. Whatever the role - cheerleader, football player, homecoming queen, or computer geek - that's often what sticks for a lifetime in these small communities, where the cast of characters can remain stable for many generations.
