" Seven million people live in slums ... "

The Bandra Slum

Bombay's water supply runs right through one of the city's worst slums, in Bandra. Bombay, "the 'City by the Sea' is also India's 'Capital of Hope,' where hundreds of thousands of newcomers stream in each year, hoping to make their fortunes or their names. Yet as India's capital of capital, responsible for nearly half the country's foreign trade, Bombay is no less a city hardened by reality, where more than seven million people live in slums or on the streets, while those above them recline in apartments more expensive per square foot than anything in Tokyo or New York" (Pico Iyer).
