" At the world's largest laundromat ... "

The Municipal Dhobi Ghats, World's Largest Laundromat

At the world's largest open-air laundromat, by some amazing feat of human labor and organisation, laundry from all over Bombay is washed in the morning, hung up to dry in the afternoon, and delivered back to the customer by the end of the day. Men and boys do all the washing, scrubbing sheets and sarees, trousers and shirts, wringing and flinging the clothes into the air to beat the water out of them, sending sparkles of soapy water into the sun. Amidst the washing of the clothes, the men wash themselves too, scrubbing their feet, lathering their hair, and brushing their teeth.
